After growing up in Colorado,  John was first introduced to the glass medium while studying at Pomona College, in Claremont, California, where he received a BA in Philosophy. While at Pomona, he indulged his interest in art, taking many art classes including a glass blowing class taught by the renowned glass artist, Thurman Statum. That introduction started John on a path which lead him to the glass artist,  Richard Silver, whose studio was in Venice, California. There, he began an apprenticeship with Silver in 1986 and worked for him for 10 years, full time, assisting and blowing glass on LA's west side in Venice, Santa Monica, and Inglewood.

In 1996 after living in Venice for 10 years,  John founded Moonlight Glass in a shop space next to Beach Boy Racing on Hampton Drive.  Since he turned his glass furnace on in 1999,  he has focused on improving his craft and exploring new ideas in glass, selling creations in stores and galleries in California and Colorado. John has also done multiple commissioned works over the 23 years that he has been blowing glass.
